Sleepless
Night
The blurb of Sleepless Night
gives the impression that you’re in for another sitcom-like
quarter-life crisis, but cast and crew show that it’s all in the
delivery. The story of Simon (Aaron Scully), his married mates
Paul and Diana (Jarred Smith and Erin Gordon), and the girl who
gets under his skin (Jenelle Pearce) does follow some well-worn
paths. Lonely singleton tormented by smug married couple (see
Bridget Jones’ Diary).
Defiantly single bloke who may be in love with a woman he hates
(see When Harry Met Sally). Sleepless Night
works because while the story is familiar, it avoids the trap of
trying to be a live-action sitcom. The delivery is smart and
snappy, with lines and movement fast but smoothly choreographed.
The performances are seamless, with the cast easily tossing the
narrative from one to another. Director Natalie Lopes has done
well with her lively interpretation of Jonathan Gavin’s script. |
